A shibori style t-shirt was dyed with indigo using a folding technique and subsequently silkscreened with indigo using “Birds on a Line” design, and finally, the t-shirt was overdyed with a beautiful blue-green in a similar shibori fold method. Other colors are available.

This t-shirt is of fine bamboo viscose (96%) and spandex (4%) and is from Foundation by Mr. Davis. For longest life, separate colors and wash and dry on cold.

Who is not inspired by the now well known work of Justice Ruth Ginsberg Bader?! This is my take on a t-shirt to honor Justice Bader: her contribution to promoting equal opportunities and rights for women. Women make a difference supporting other women. I designed and created this t-shirt using a hand carved “rbg” stamp and hand painted silkscreen to produce her likeness. Wash with like colors and remove promptly from the machine after cycle ends. A color coordinated linen runner and quilted mat for a handmade wooden sideboard. As a commissioned piece, these two pieces were designed for maximum flexibility to protect and decorate this handsome sideboard. Inspired by mountain views in western North Carolina, historic old houses, a love of trees and their intricate branches, and the Carolina blue skies, this piece was conceived as a tribute of color complementing Kathryn's wine glass and blown glass collection and other colorful artwork in her living and dining areas. Many layers of hand dyeing, silkscreening, color discharge, hand painting and stamping contribute to the overall effect. The quilted pad is reversible and can be used on either side underneath the linen runner, and both can be used separately as well, depending upon the mood!! For potluck dinner parties, the the added protection of the quilted pad will keep the wooden surface unscarred.

This linen shibori table runner is hand dyed in shibori style using indigo, then hand stamped, and finally hand quilted. The edges are serged to prevent raveling. This insulated linen table runner is 6" wide and 53" long and brings to mind the beautiful outdoor colors in fall when marigold blooms are still present and leaves are falling exposing bare branches. Washable in warm-cold water, hang to dry, iron if needed with covering cloth. Length can be shorted if needed for an exact fit.

Kathryn's Cat Eddie in the Moonlight: linen table runner, hand dyed. MADE TO ORDER click HERE!

Pure linen, hand dyed table runner. 13.5" wide by 136.5" long

Eddie, the youngest of Kathryn's cats, inspired the design of this double weight linen runner. Hunting in the moonlight, a cat's favorite occupation (or stalking a silbling cat around the back of the door!). Silkscreen color discharge of a tiger cat, marigolds, moons, and trees stamped on the shibori hand dyed fabric. All stamps and silkscreen cat done by hand. Machine wash and dry, pre-shrunk. Iron if needed, but on reverse or using ironing cloth to cover the design.

Looking out of the windows of our house on the side of a small mountain inspires my daily living: my art, gardening, walks up and down hills and along the valley road. I feel integrated with the surrounding environment living amongst the tops of trees. Peaceful.

This wax resist piece was created on a second layer of fabric backing the original layer of cloth. Additional painting, stamping, and discharge work added eye riveting color and textures.

The themes of trees and ponds enter my work frequently as scenes through our big windows, often glimpsed, inspire my fiber art: koi pond, trees, trillium, changing colors through the day and year. Family and friends gather here.

These simple placemats were inspired by our small lotus pond and surrounding grass with a lotus bud emerging on a tall stalk in the pond. A beautifully tactile look is created by hand quilting, mostly by the window during the day for the good light! The cotton cloth was dyed using the resist technique of batik and backing constructed from upcycled fabric. Set of 2. 18" by 12".

Set of 6 matching handmade placemats and napkins. Our beautiful koi pond with pink blooming lotus in the summer inspired the lotus silkscreen pattern. Muslin was first ice-dyed using blues, greens, yellows, and reds, and then the silkscreen applied. Backing muslin was also hand dyed using marigolds from our yard! The quilting is by hand, not machine. Linen napkins were similarly dyed and silkscreened. Napkins 15" X 15", placemats 16.5" wide and 11.5" tall. Have fun with various fold patterns and arrangements next to or on the placemats! Machine wash and dry. Napkins stitched to allow some (but not too much!) fraying.

Custom made placemats of unique design and in different colors. Each color combination was chosen to compliment a set of Polish made dishes containing blues, greens, yellows, and orange. Themes of trees, flowers, and animal life viewed from my North Carolina window on the mountains create the surface design. A stitched double layer of linen is dyed to make placemat sets that can be used at smaller dinner parties. Each was hand dyed using the shibori technique in green, blue, yellow, and orange. Final size of each of 14 mats is 18" by 16.5".

Hand dyed, batik, painted, and hand stitched.  All leaves and flowers and seed pods that I have seen and photographed for inspiration. Private Collection.

The top was quilted by machine using purchased stretch denim and cotton print fabric.  Yarn was stitched as edging on the squares.  The most fun part was knitting squares using remnants of my favorite wool yarns which I then felted in the washing machine.  For the back I used a flannel sheet that was left unattached with 3 seams and buttons on one end.  If it gets really really cold, it could be a duvet cover!  I made this for my son and his wife; it was meant to be dog-proof. 30ish years ago I bought enough solid color cotton fabric to make two quilts, one for each son.  The first quilt, well I used wool batting and it shrunk about 50% in size.  Oops.  This is the second quilt. Purchased fabric, machine quilted. Private Collection.

Zinnia pattern inspired from my backyard garden.

I see in 3's and in the dozens and here and there.

Inspired by cell biology experiments in which a microscope can slice through a living cell containing one protein labeled with a fluorescent molecule.  

For cell biologists who study fluorescently- labeled cells using a confocal microscope. Check out the SCIENCE page for more information.

Carnivorous pitcher plants are native to North Carolina. Insects are trapped in specially shaped leaves and in the spring unusual flowers are produced in a beautiful reddish brownish color. SOLD.

Pokeberries plants spring up everywhere in the country and are so rich looking when the berry ripens.  But, be careful, they are poisonous.  What a lovely color leaves and berries.

Smoothies, muffins, with oatmeal, and growing on the hillsides at my friend's house on the mountain in Western North Carolina.

Just down Green Valley sits a house in a field by a stream.

Our pond has koi and lotus. The lotus blooms late in the summer after the tall leaves have formed.  First a flower pod on a long stem, then later the seed pod forms.

I love trees in the fall and winter.  This is one of them.

Lotus blossoms and the large seeds sent down from the ripened and tipped seed pod inspired this pattern.

Leafless trees make such beautiful patterns.

A country walk takes one by cows in the field and turkeys on the hill.

Every year marigolds reseed in my garden, along the edge of the driveway, just anywhere.  I harvest the flowers then dye wool and fabric with the extracted color.  The smell is wonderful.  A table top covered with marigolds inspired these flower shapes.

A single cell reacts to angiotensin. The movement on the edge of the cell is called "ruffling" of the membrane. The angiotensin receptor (green) at the cell surface moves inward to the center of the cell in response to angiotensin.  Since only the bottom of the cell is included in this 3D volume created using a laser scanning confocal microscope, the green becomes paler and paler on the surface while the internalized receptor disappears from our view. The green receptor does not significantly overlap lysosomes (red). 25 minutes loop at 1 frame per second.
